Panic Attacks| What They Are, and What You Can Do

Hey sweet peas

I hope you’ve all had an amazing week, and having a great Sunday/Saturday πŸ™‚

You might’ve noticed my recent absence from my blog, a lot more than usual, and today I wanted to explain why. I’ve been hesitant to do so, because as I always say I only want to put positive posts on my blog, and ones I am proud of, so I knew I needed to wait until I could do that about this topic.

So, I’ve been having panic attacks. I don’t know if they are worse than they were in years previous, or if its just that I know what they are now, but I’ve definitely allowed them to rule my life. And I am quite determined to not let that continue on.

So, what is a panic attack? It comes in many shapes and forms, but mostly its just a reaction to thinking that the situation you are in could harm you, so your body goes into lockdown and you can’t really control it. For me, I have someone at school who isn’t being especially nice to me, but that’s really all the detail I want to give because I don’t want to start gossiping to you lot πŸ™‚ Apparently for women, more often than not its pent up anger that we don’t know how to express so we have panic attacks when we get too full. Just remember though, that there is nothing wrong with you if you have one. You shouldn’t be ashamed of having panic attacks, and there are definitely ways to combat them.

Techniques for combatting a panic attack:

  • Find someone you trust. One day I was having the beginnings of one, so I ran and found my amazing friend who does German with me, and just told her I was having the beginning of one. She gave me a hug, and calmed me down, and kept emailing me during class to make sure I was okay. Love her so much haha πŸ˜€ Another time I was having the loss of breath I have before I get one, so one of my close friends took me outside of where we were, and just talked to me soothingly, and we managed to get me out of it. She’s an angel, I swear <3
  • Talk to someone about them. I tell my mum straight away when I have one, especially since I had one on the way to school, so she took me home and made sure I was ok. She’s talked to me about them, and we’ve thought of ways to deal with them. When I had the worst one at school (thatΒ I did mention in a post) I askedΒ my really close friendsΒ to text my mum and tell her what had happened. It always makes me feel a little better knowing my mum knows, and that she’s going to help me.
  • Breathing. Sometimes you might find yourself going into one, so its helpful to focus on breathing calmly and slowly. If need be, ask to go outside, and just breathe for a while. Walking around calmly helps too, and helps you focus.
  • Knowing your limits. Sometimes you need to take the day off and rest, but you also need to get out there and do things. Don’t let your panic attacks run your life, and prevent you from doing things you love. Easier said than done, I know, but take one step at a time, and just remember the things you love. I check my blog pretty much everyday, and when I see a new comment pop up I feel a little better knowing you guys are out there πŸ™‚

I hope that this post helped you, especially if you are going through this too. Just remember, I am here for you, and you are not alone in this. I really hope you can combat them, and remember all the good things that you love in life. No one deserves to have to deal with panic attacks, and I can honestly say that you lot are some of the strongest and kindest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing, so you all have the ability to overcome them πŸ™‚

Any tips you have, or any stories, or even if you just want to talk, I would love to hear about them in the comments, and I will be sure to reply and read them asap, because I think it will make me feel a bit better πŸ™‚

Love you all, and thanks for being here for me πŸ™‚

Lui xxxx

      • April 4, 2017 / 12:18 am

I do have a few! So one thing that really helps me is music. Doesn’t matter what music really, I just put in headphones and focus on that. Another thing that helps is being outside. I often feel so trapped when I get a panic attack so if I can I step outside or just find a quiet area. Oh and a bit of a random one, gum or even hard candy. Something long lasting that will distract me until I calm down. I haven’t had a full panic attack in over a year and when I’ve felt one starting I’ve been able to stop it using a combination of these tricks. I’m not sure how flexible your school may be so I don’t know if you would be able to do any of these (my schools were quite strict and I wouldn’t have been able to do any of these when I was younger) but maybe see if you can go to the school nurse when you feel one coming? Then you could get a quiet place to lie down until you feel better. πŸ™‚

        • April 10, 2017 / 5:52 pm

thank you so much – all of them sound super useful! and already I know that going outside is something that helps me! πŸ™‚ <3 thank you so so much! πŸ™‚ it really has made me feel better, and thank you so much for ur kindness πŸ™‚ xx

This is a beautiful post to show awareness and more importantly how to help the situation. I personally never had a full out panic attack although I definitely have had very very minor ones but one of my good friends definitely had to combat panic attacks often and luckily I’ve known her long enough where I know what I can do as an outsider to help her when/if she does have them around me…but from her perspective her breathing and talking things out really helps her! Very good and informative post! <3

aw thanks! <3 and yes I know what u mean – I never was someone who got them, and I don't think that my close friends get them, but I can usually tell if someone else has, and I guess now I am more aware of them πŸ™‚ and that's really nice that u have that bond with her πŸ™‚ and thanks for the tip!! πŸ™‚ <3 xx

Great post and I understand what you mean by loosing control of your body/reaction. In my worst ever panick attack, I was shaking so much but I wasn’t able to stop it.
This post really helped, thank you!

I’m so sorry to hear that you are having panic attacks. I hope they get better! I do have anxiety but no specialist has confirmed it? (hope that makes sense) When I was younger I would get really horrible panic attacks but I haven’t gotten one in a while (I think like that one in October after writing the motivational post) I really love your tips and will definitely remember this post next time I have one (okay that sounds really bad but you know what I mean)πŸ˜‰β€οΈ

    • April 10, 2017 / 5:44 pm

aw thank you! and I’m really sorry that u get panic attacks too πŸ™ and I get what u said at the end – I definitely agree that while its kind of sad to have to say “next time” but its good to be prepared πŸ™‚ I really hope this is something u can overcome! xxx

Dogs can be very helpful for panic attacks. There are some dogs that can detect a panic attack 15 minutes before it happens. They can then help the person calm down and sometimes not even have the panic attack. I haven’t had a dog like this personally, but I am try to get a therapy dog for myself. Just thought I’d pass that tip along for any dog lovers.
