Hey sweet peas!! 🙂
So back in July I upgraded my blog to be a self-hosted website (if you want to see my post initially afterwards click here), going from WordPress to my own platform. I didn’t talk a lot about the actual experience, and I know it is definitely incredibly helpful to do research and see what people actually think about going self-hosted before you take the plunge, so today I want to talk about that 🙂
On Instagram I asked if you had any questions, so I will answer them first 🙂
- Is it worth going self hosted?
I think that it is a really cool step to take, and I definitely love the freedom I have in designing and creating my own unique place on the internet 🙂 It is a bit pricey, and it can be a bit of a tricky process, but 4 months down the track I am very happy with the result 🙂
- How did you find the transfer?
I will be honest. I found the transfer really hard. I found it really hard to find resources and information that clearly told me what to do, and I am so glad I had Rosinalee helping me because otherwise I would’ve just given up. However, I have taken notes on what to do, and have written down all my recommendations which I am happy to post 🙂 Each blogger will have a different story, and I think everyone would say that despite the trickiness everything turned out okay.
- Has it made any difference?
100%! I love being able to customize more, and do more 🙂 I really love having my own web address, and I just feel more professional and like a legitimate blogger! 😉
So that’s the questions answered! I think it is really important also to know what going self-hosted actually means.
So what does it all mean?
Basically it just means that instead of wordpress.com (or whatever your blogging platform is) hosting your website, you host it yourself. You are able to make money of it (I don’t know yet how to do this!), customize it, and make it your own professional space. It becomes part of wordpress.org, but you get to customize what you want your web address to be (so I chose luimaria.com, but there are lots of choices). I just want to say that a lot of the technical stuff goes over my head, and I would recommend both the posts below to read as both those bloggers have gone self-hosted from WordPress too! (Plus you can see how amazing their blogs look!) 🙂
If you are interested in going self-hosted I would also recommend having a look at:
- Site-ground (they are who now hosting my blog)
- Pipdig (they are where I bought my theme, however sight-ground have free ones too)
I hope this helped, and if you would like more information please do ask questions, I will answer them! I am also happy to put up my notes and tips from when I did upgrade – I wish I’d known them before-hand! Let me know if you want to see this 🙂
Until next time,
