Hello everyone! 🙂
So today I thought I’d talk about the awesome trip my German host family took me on over the Christmas holidays! Seeing as in New Zealand it takes 3 hours alone (flying!) to get to another country (Australia!), the prospect of just hopping in the car at 9am with an overnight bag, and no passports or tickets (although I took both my drivers licence and passport haha!) was certainly exciting, and definitely an experience! 😉
I was kind of shocked that the only way my family actually knew we had crossed the border into the Netherlands was when they stopped being able to understand the radio – it was literally still the same station, just in Dutch! It was kind of funny that my family had to start speaking English to the Dutch because neither lot actually knew each others language as well as they knew English; although as far as I can tell the Dutch learn German in school? Well their English was really good, but I found it hard going from four weeks of German to having to speak English! I kept saying “danke”, and my family often ordered for me haha! 😀
We stayed in the gorgeous city of Leiden, slightly south and more coastal than Amsterdam, but just as beautiful as I’ve been told! 😉 It truly was such a gorgeous town, and I would 100% recommend just going for a walk around the older central part of the city. My camera lens stopped working when we were there so I was solely reliant on my host mother and my cell phone for photos haha! There was an old castle that we had a walk around (and quite a few photos, of course!), and we walked around the canal (is that the right word?) at night with the lights on (to be fair it was probably only 5pm or something, yet it was dark!), which was really magical, and very different than what I am used to! I really thought it was cool how many bikes were being used, and that you could hire a bike so easily!
The next day we went to Katvijk, on the coast, and went for a walk on the beach in January! Very different to my usual January beach trips (its summer in NZ!), but all the same very cool and beautiful! Plus we could see right up the coastline, even as far as being able to see Den Haag in the distance!
I really enjoyed the Netherlands, even though I wasn’t really in the big touristy areas (Amsterdam) I really got a feel for what the Netherlands are like! I am very keen to go back and spend a bit more time having a good look around! 🙂
I would love to know your recommendations for the Netherlands, and if you’ve ever been there! Have you been to Leiden, or somewhere in the Netherlands? I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🙂
Until next time,
