Why My Travel Plans Have Changed|Gap Year Diary

Yo yo yo everyone, and welcome back to my blog!!

As you might remember, if you’ve been here for a while, this year is my gap year/ first year out of school, and with it I am working for nine months and then travelling to Europe for two and a half. My plans have changed vastly from the original idea, the first draft, the second draft, and now what I would consider the third and final draft, before the good copy (for all you writers out there, I hope you appreciate my wee analogyπŸ˜‰).

Originally I wanted to go in September to October, then it changed to August, then to October to December. I was all ready to book the flights (literally, I was sat in my travel agents office, and I said “I’m so ready to go, I’ll go alone if I have to!!) … And then, well just that happened; what I had been worried about happening actually happened. Before I go on, I must make it clear I’m not the least bit bitter/salty about this situation – I’m rather excited to be honest!! But what happened? The friend I was going to travel with (who I love!!) got an amazing opportunity to thrive in her dream situation, and I mean how can you not be happy for her? Truth be told I was VERY shook up merely by the fact that what I’d been afraid of for so long was actually going to happen… Travelling solo. Yep. Your gal Lui Maria is going to go out into the big unknown relatively alone. Heck.

However, the pros? I get to go whenever I want, go where ever I want, do whatever I want, and get to spend as little as I want. Great right? And I’m fully aware that this is a novelty that I’m just not going to have once I get a student loan, a career, rent to pay, and maybe one day a spouse/family of my own to support. Luckily I’m going to have plenty of support over there, including a tour at the beginning, my German exchange family, some rellys, and the dancing queen/former travel buddy herself!

Am I nervous? Very. But that’s mostly because I’m worried I can’t afford to be away for the amount of days that I’ve booked 😬 But it’s a non-refundable ticket so… πŸ˜… But lads, I’m booked, I’m planning, and it’s actually happening. Something I never thought I’d be able to do is truly starting to happen, and once I get my financial anxiety sorted it’ll all be very very real!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

Let me know if you’ve done any solo travel yourself, or if you want to one day? Would you do it? What have you enjoyed about it? What do you recommend?

Until next time,

Lui xx

I do it all the time – not for the length of time you are going though.. I tend to travel by myself all the time and then meet up with friends during my travels. I love the fact that I can literally go where I want, when I want and not have to wait for people or have people wait for me!

I will admit though, that it does get lonely on your own but if you like your own company anyway then you shouldn’t have too much of an issue. And also with social media and the internet, you are never really far away from the people at home

Thanks so much for saying this!! I’m so excited for I guess a pretty novel opportunity, to me, of doing anything I want when I want, without having to consult others! But I’m also adding in lots of stops to see friends/family along the way, because as you say loneliness can become very real! Thanks for commenting 😊😊

I'd Love To Hear Your Thoughts!
